SPECTRUM: a color psychology story

SPECTRUM: a color psychology story is an ongoing photography series that emphasizes the significant force of color and how it shapes our everyday lives. to show that everything is not what it seems on the exterior surface. to allow those who desire to dig deeper within themselves feel more seen and understood.

a vibrant juxtaposition, each individual color is a force and universe in itself. the first step to seeing and understanding color is to become familiar with the language used to describe its general associations. then, deconstruct the complex power that each color holds and ask ourselves— how can we interpret the pain as much as the joy we feel when experiencing the color spectrum?

1. Pink Feeling, Pink Power.

Pink Feeling, Pink Power is an alternative narrative to the innocent and feminine nature to the color pink. Pink is an electric ferocity that binds resistance to the cosmos. It is the power Geo taps into as he smashes through the mirror of gender containment, it is his project of self-effacement that allows him to deny the faux construction of inside and outside. Geo’s pink is boundless, it is a power that cannot be reproduced. Pink is the pathway through which Geo finds life in the face of death, which is a beautiful vulnerability that fosters emotional connection more powerful than any force of the past. Pink power is a peak towards new open and free futures.

2. subgolden hour

Subgolden Hour is an alternative narrative to the sunny disposition of the color yellow. Yellow is a powerful force that enchants our existence with vitality. When Steven shares a taste of yellow through sunshine and flowers, a thorn pricks Mia’s finger. Too much yellow for Mia is exhausting, and too much hope feels draining. Yellow is toxic positivity, a rejection of difficult emotions in favor of a cheery façade. It is chasing, not attracting. It is the barrier to embracing the unknown. It is the antithesis of the law of detachment, yellow is the avoidance of struggle and the denial of failure. It is the nullification that suffering is an integral part of what it means to be human.
